Trojans Drill St. Andrews, 4-1

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Anderson University scored three goals in the first 26 minutes, including a pair by freshman Lasse Sohrweide, en route to a 4-1 Conference Carolinas men's soccer victory over host St. Andrews Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon. Anderson, unbeaten in its last seven matches, improves to 7-3-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the conference. Senior Kevin Valkenburg scored in the first minute of the game to give AU the lead for good. Senior Justin Garton scored the Knights lone goal in the 52nd minute on a penalty kick. Garton ranks second in the conference with nine goals on the season. Anderson was able to grab a quick 3-0 lead in the first half with good passing plays. Valkenburg started the scoring just 37 seconds into the match after receiving the ball in the SAPC box off a couple zig zag passes by sophomore Adrien Moufflet and senior Josh Nguyen. Valkenburg has five goals on the year. Sohrweide netted the next two AU goals in an eight-minute span increasing his team-high goal total to seven. Sohrweide doubled up the Anderson lead in the 18th minute by tapping in a pass from senior Lahnden Onger. Sohrweide tallied his next goal in the 26th minute by heading in a long crossing pass off a free kick by freshman Aldo Lopez-Gil. Garton ended Anderson's bid at a third straight shutout by easily converting on a PK in the 52nd minute. Nguyen added an insurance goal for Anderson in the 63rd minute with his first score of the season. Nguyen, who finished with a goal and an assist on the afternoon, ripped a shot inside the box after gaining control of a free ball. Anderson sophomore starting goalkeeper Benjamin Pepion only needed to make one save for his third victory of the season. Knights' senior netminder Nick Stevens was tagged with the loss allowing three goals in the first 45 minutes while making two saves. In a physical game that featured 36 fouls and five yellow cards for each team, Anderson dominated the scoring chances with an 11-4 shot advantage while SAPC held a 5-3 corner kick edge.
