Pepion Saves Trojans

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson University goalkeeper Benjamin Pepion stopped a penalty shot by Pfeiffer's Nick Brindley with 56.7 seconds remaining to preserve the Trojans' 3-2 victory over the Falcons in a Conference Carolinas men's match Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field. The victory improves Anderson to 10-5-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the conference. Anderson finishes the regular season in second place, its highest finish ever in the conference standings. The 10-win season is Anderson's second since joining Division II in 1999. All five goals were scored in the first half. Anderson jumped on top 1-0 at the 22:05 mark when Kevin Valkenburg scored off a rebound. Lasse Sohrweide's 10th goal of the season at the 25:34 mark increased Anderson's lead to 2-0. Valkenburg took a pass from Sohrweide and scored again at 30:19 to give AU a 3-0 advantage. The two goals increased Valkenburg's season total to eight. But the Falcons bounced back with two goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half -- the first by Matt Denton and the second by Brindley -- to cut the Anderson lead to 3-2. Brindley's penalty kick opportunity was the best scoring chance either team was able to create in the second half. Pepion finished the match with five saves. Anderson outshot Pfeiffer, 14-10. Anderson will open play in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Tuesday at home at 7 p.m. Anderson University Men's Soccer Statistics
