Trojans Rally To Beat Newberry, 4-3

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Trailing 2-0 and a man down, Anderson University rallied for a wild 4-3 victory over Newberry in a non-conference match Saturday night at Smethers Field. Anderson, 1-1 overall, trailing 1-0 at the half fell into a 2-0 hole just 48 seconds into the second half. Kwame Gyamfi lofted a shot over Anderson goalkeeper Benjamin Pepion to score Newberry's first goal at the 13:02 mark, and Mark Smith scored Newberry's second goal at 45:48. The Trojans lost Stephen Henry to a red card in the 57th minute before starting their dramatic rally. Lasse Sohrweide cut the Newberry lead to 2-1 at 69:12 with a bending shot off an assist from Zach Denson. The match stayed at 2-1 until the final nine minutes when the two teams combined for four goals. Trey Boyd gave Newberry a 3-1 lead at the 81:13 mark. But then Paulo Passini scored two goals in less than two minutes -- the first off the dribble and the second off a corner kick -- to tie the match at 3. The game winner was scored by Kevin Valkenburg off an assist by Passini at the 86:52 mark. The loss drops Newberry to 0-2.
