Trojans Up Regular Season With 3-0 Sweep of Eagles

ANDERSON, S.C. – Honoring eight seniors prior to the match, the Anderson University volleyball team (24-4, 16-2 SAC) sent them off in their last regular season home match-up with a 3-0 sweep over Carson-Newman on Friday, November 10.

Senior Rylie Sargent (Greer, S.C.) led all hitters with nine kills in the contest while fellow seniors Tabitha Wheeler (Greenville, S.C.) and Meg Sansbury (Seneca, S.C.) each tallied seven kills. Graduate Lindsay McCurley (Simpsonville, S.C.) racked up 15 digs in the contest to lead the team while senior Jenna Long (Clearwater, Fla.) chipped in 32 assists.

The Eagles were able to come into enemy territory and gain the early lead from the Trojans, as the two teams battled it out in the start of the first set. Anderson was able to use a three-point run to tie the match up at 10, but the Eagles again took a slight lead that would dissipate quickly as the Trojans were able to tie it right back up at 14. A four-point swing in favor of the Black and Gold saw them take the 18-14 advantage, but Carson-Newman clawed back to within one before the Trojans reset with a timeout. The Trojans outscored the Eagles by just one point over the final run but were able to take the set 25-23.

The second set was much more favorable for the Trojans as they led by as much as five points at 11-6 before forcing the Eagles to take their first timeout of the set. The teams traded points until the 19-14 mark when the Trojans were able to string together a trio of points that forced the second timeout of the set at 22-14. Though the Eagles were able to outscore the Trojans by a slim 4-3 margin over the closing points, Anderson was able to close out the second set, 25-18.

Three-straight points off the service of sophomore Katy Smith (Fleming Island, Fla.) kicked off the scoring in the third set for Anderson followed by another four-point run that cause the Eagles to take a timeout trailing the Trojans 8-3. Anderson put together massive runs over the final stretch of the contest that allowed them to further their advantage to as many as 11 at 21-10. Anderson wrapped up the set and the match 25-15.

The Trojans now set their sights on the South Atlantic Conference tournament where they have secured the second seed for the upcoming tournament and will face seventh-seeded Limestone in a home match on Monday, November 13.
