Trojans Rebound With 3-0 Sweep of Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Bouncing back from a mid-week setback in non-conference action, the Anderson University volleyball team secured a victory over Tusculum in straight sets during a league showdown on Friday, September 29.

Seniors Jaelyn Grimm (Cedar Park, Texas) and Tabitha Wheeler (Greenville, S.C.) led the team with 11 kills each. Grimm, in particular, had an outstanding attacking performance, boasting a .625 attacking percentage, which ties for seventh all-time. Senior Jenna Long (Clearwater, Fla.) contributed 37 assists and tied for the team lead with 13 digs alongside graduate Lindsay McCurley (Simpsonville, S.C.) and sophomore Katy Smith (Fleming Island, Fla.).

The Trojans dominated the match from the start, utilizing a pair of triple-point runs to establish a 10-4 advantage, prompting a timeout from the Pioneers. Points were exchanged between the teams, but the Trojans held a 19-13 lead, forcing another timeout from Tusculum. Although Tusculum managed to score five more points after the timeout, the Trojans closed out the set by outscoring them 6-5 in the final stretch, securing a 25-18 win.

The second set began similarly, with the Pioneers keeping the set closer than the first but still trailing by two points as the Trojans led 10-6. A four-point streak for Tusculum brought them within two points, but Anderson responded with a three-point streak of their own, taking an 18-13 lead. Anderson concluded the set with a 7-4 run, clinching a 25-17 victory.

In the third set, the Trojans initiated a four-point run and extended their lead to 7-1, prompting a timeout from the Pioneers. Tusculum managed to narrow the gap to three points at 9-6, but the Trojans doubled their score shortly after, leading 14-7. After another Tusculum timeout, the Trojans held off a pair of point streaks from the Pioneers and won the closest set of the evening with a score of 25-20.

The Trojans will return to action on Tuesday, October 3, as they welcome Limestone to the Abney Athletic Center for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
