Anderson Downs Lions in Straight Sets

MARS HILL, N.C. – Heading on the road after picking up a 3-0 sweep at home last night, the Anderson University volleyball team mirrored that performance as they took a three-set victory over Mars Hill on Saturday, October 14.

"We had an amazing crowd of crowd of Anderson friends and family on the road and I know the team loved playing in front of them," said coach Todd Hay. "This was one of our better offensive outputs on the season and the passing really showed up for us in a in a big way. Hopefully we can continue to improve as we enter the home stretch of the regular season."

Seniors Rylie Sargent (Greer, S.C.) and Jaelyn Grimm (Cedar Park, Texas) each recorded 14 kills on the afternoon to lead the Trojans. Senior Sadie Kluner (Venice, Fla.) fell just short of the double-digit mark as she added 9. Senior Jenna Long (Clearwater, Fla.) recorded 46 assists in the contest while graduate Lindsay McCurley (Simpsonville, S.C.) posted a team-high 12 digs.

The Trojans were able to start off the opening set with a 5-1 advantage, forcing an early Mars Hill timeout. Neither team would find a run over the next few points, until the Trojans were able to put together a five-point run at 13-9, to extend their advantage out to 18-9. The two squads traded points back and forth over the closing stretch before the Trojans were able to wrap up the set with three straight points to take the 25-14 victory.

Mars Hill took their first lead of the contest at 2-1 early in the second set, but it wouldn't take long until the Trojans would swing the lead back to their side of the scoreboard at 10-7. A three-point run followed by a few point trades continued to extend the Anderson lead to 19-13 late in the set. A pair of three-point runs by the Trojans wrapped up the set, 25-18.

Again, Mars Hill took the lead in the early goings of the set and was able to trade ties with the Trojans back and forth until Anderson took the lead at 6-5. That would be the closest that the Lions would get to the Trojans the rest of the contest as Anderson was able to further extend their lead out to 19-15. Mars Hill forced a late timeout after a three-point run, but out of the timeout Anderson would only give up one more point as the Trojans took the set 25-19.

Anderson returns to action on Tuesday, October 17 as they travel to Salisbury, N.C. to take on Catawba for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
