Trojans Win Fourth Straight With 3-0 Defeat of Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Stringing together their fourth straight win, the Anderson University volleyball team picked up their 11th sweep of the season as they took down Newberry in straight sets on the road on Tuesday, October 10.

"We played a complete match tonight from start to finish," said head coach Todd Hay. "It wasn't perfect by any means, but we were steady all night. The defense set the tone from the beginning, and it was fun to see that. We wanted to make them work hard for every point and did that for the most part. We look forward to seeing everyone Friday night in the Abney!"

Senior Sadie Kluner (Venice, Fla.) led the Trojans on the evening with 13 kills, hitting .480 in the contest while senior Tabitha Wheeler (Greenville, S.C.) pitched in eight of her own. Graduate Lindsay McCurley (Simpsonville, S.C.) was again great from the service line, recording three aces. Senior Jenna Long (Clearwater, Fla.) recorded 33 assists and led the team with 18 digs.

Anderson took the advantage quickly in the opening set as they recorded the first two points of the set and then further extended their lead to 10-4. After allowing the Wolves a pair of points to close the gap to four, the Trojans went on a six-point run that put the Anderson advantage into the double digits at 16-6. Newberry was only able to cut that lead to nine on multiple occasions, but Anderson was able to put away the set, 25-14.

Again, the Trojans were able to jump out to an early advantage in the second set as they scored the first seven points of the frame before allowing the Wolves to score. Newberry put together a short lived three-point run to pull back to within four points, but Anderson rattled off a three-point streak of their own with the score at 11-4. A five-point and six-point run by Anderson over the closing stretch locked up the set for them, 25-10.

Anderson was again the dominant force in the third set, taking the early 10-1 lead. A pair of three-point runs by the Trojans in the middle of the set further extended their lead after it was cut into by the Wolves with a four-point run of their own. Leading 22-16 late in the set, the two teams traded points back and forth, leading to the Trojans wrapping up the 25-19 win.

Anderson returns to action on Friday, October 13 as they welcome Coker to the Abney Athletic Center for a 7:00 p.m. match-up.
