Anderson Takes Eighth Straight With Sweep of Wasps

ANDERSON, S.C. – Picking up their eighth straight win as they continue to sit atop the conference standings, the Anderson University volleyball team knocked off Emory & Henry in straight sets on Friday, October 20.

Senior Tabitha Wheeler (Greenville, S.C.) led the attacking effort for the Trojans, tallying nine kills in the contest while a trio of Trojans in senior Sadie Kluner (Venice, Fla.), freshman Emily Campbell (Statesville, N.C.) and sophomore Kaitlyn Barrett (Inman, S.C.) each were able to add six kills of their own. Anderson was balanced across the board in digs while senior Jenna Long (Clearwater, Fla.) posted 22 assists with freshman Ellie Nieporte (Boca Raton, Fla.) adding 13 of her own.

Anderson continued their trend of jumping out to early leads in set as not only did they score the first four points of the match, the further extended their lead out to 9-4. With the score sitting at 13-8, the Trojans were able to string together six straight points to bring their lead up to 19-8. The Wasps were able to put two more points on the board in the first set, but Anderson was able to close it out with a pair of three-point streaks to take the set 25-10.

Emory & Henry was able to take the first point of the set to take their first lead of the match, and though they would again lead 3-2, the Trojans scored six straight points to retake the lead for good in the set at 8-3. Though the two teams were able to trade points back and forth in the middle of the set, the Trojans were able to work a five-point run in the late goings and closed the set out, 25-14.

The third set saw the Trojans nearly empty their bench as five of the seven starters were altered from the previous two sets. That wouldn't change the course of the third set as again Anderson scored the first four point and then increased their lead out 10-3. Though that was the point where the set started to get interesting as the Wasps were able to battle back and pull back to within four points at 19-15. Anderson took the next three points, but Emory & Henry strung together the next four to close the gap to three at 22-19. The Trojans closed out the set outscoring the Wasps 3-1 over the final stretch to take the third 25-20.

The Trojan turn around tomorrow for a non-conference match-up with Emmanuel on the road in Franklin Springs, Ga. The first serve for the contest is slated for 2:00 p.m.
