Trojans Dominate Cobras 3-0 in League Action

ANDERSON, S.C. – In a contest that saw the Anderson University volleyball team nearly empty its bench with a majority of the team seeing playing time, the Trojans took away a 3-0 dominating win over Coker on Friday, October 13.

Senior Meg Sansbury (Seneca, S.C.) led all attackers with seven kills on the night while senior Jaelyn Grimm (Cedar Park, Texas), freshman Karley Black (Leander, Texas) and sophomore Brantley Chipley (Spartanburg, S.C.) each chipped in six of their own. Senior Jenna Long (Clearwater, Fla.) led the squad with 23 assists while freshman Ellie Nieporte (Boca Raton, Fla.) added 13.

The Trojans leaped out to a 6-0 lead, forcing an early timeout by the Cobras. It didn't pay off for them as Anderson continued to keep their foot on the gas, further extending their lead to 10-1. Coker was only able to string together a pair of points together once in the set, in the waning moments but Anderson finished it out with a 25-9 first set win.

The second set mirrored the first as the Trojans took the 6-0 lead before Coker was able to get their first points of the set. After a couple more points for the Cobras, leading to the Trojans leading at 10-3, Anderson strung together nine straight points to put the set out of reach at 19-3. The Cobras put together only their second multi-point rally of the night with four points put together, but Anderson shut them down taking the set 25-10.

Early points from Coker kept the third set tied for the first time in the contest but Anderson put together a pair of four-point rallies to take the 13-5 lead. Three points were put together by Coker to break up the Trojans run, but the Black and Gold responded with six straight points of their own to take the lead back out to 19-8. The Trojans outscored the Cobras 6-4 over the final stretch, claiming the 25-12 win.

The Trojans return to action tomorrow as they travel to Mars Hill, N.C. to take on the Lions in a 2:00 p.m. showdown.
