ANDERSON, S.C. - With back-to-back wins, Anderson University women's soccer looks to make it three straight victories as the Trojans head to Brevard on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Kickoff from the Brevard Soccer Field is slated for 1:30 p.m.
The Trojans
Anderson has claimed back-to-back 1-0 wins over non-conference
opponent Emmanuel and South Atlantic Conference foe Lincoln
Memorial, moving AU to 4-6-4 overall and 2-2-4 in league play. As
the Trojans added three points with their key victory over LMU,
Anderson sits alone in eighth place in the conference standings, a
point behind Tusculum in seventh and two points clear of
Carson-Newman, which is in ninth.
Freshman Tera Dolan and senior Krystal Goss were the heroes of last week's matches, as each player recorded game-winners. Dolan got her goal against Emmanuel when she headed in a cross from classmate Paige Gowans-Smith. Goss, who now leads the team in goals with four, made her final Homecoming match a memorable one, lobbing a shot into the LMU goal to give Anderson the 1-0 victory. Goss' four goals match her assists total to give her 12 points on the season, which ties her for 11th place in the conference.
Senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Neipp has been in goal in these last two contests, recording a combined nine saves and earning both shutouts. Neipp holds 20.4 shutouts for her career and will move into a tie for seventh all-time with her next clean sheet. For the season, the Anderson, S.C. native has 84 saves on the season, currently the second-most in the league.
The Tornados
After beginning the season 3-0, Brevard has dropped nine
of the last 10 and currently sit at 3-9-1 overall and is still
seeking its first SAC win, as the Tornados hold a 0-6-1 conference
mark. Since a 2-2 draw at Carson-Newman on Sept. 28, BC has lost
five straight contests and have been outscored 13-2 in the span.
Most recently, the Tornados fell to sixth-place Catawba, 1-0.
Brevard's season has been headlined by senior goalkeeper Bree McMahon's inspirational story, as she plays with a prosthetic leg after being in a car accident when she was 17-years-old. McMahon was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter and went through rehabilitation with Pittsburgh Pirates all-star reliever Jason Grilli, who called McMahon his "angel" during an interview with Fox Sports' Joe Buck during the 2013 All-Star Game. McMahon has not seen any action during the 2013 season.
Sarah Fonger and Yuki Soga are tied for the team-lead in goals with three apiece, as Fonger leads the team in shots with 17 on the year. Soga also leads the squad in assists with three, an assist ahead of Elena Crowe, who has two.
In goal, Brittany Webster has played every minute for the Tornados, making 51 saves and hold a 2.09 goals against average for the season. Webster is still searching for her first shutout of the season.
The Series
Since joining the conference in 2010, Anderson holds a perfect 3-0
record over Brevard, outscoring the Tornados 7-1 in those three
contests. Last season, Goss and classmate Olivia Scalzitti recorded
goals in a 2-0 victory over BC at Trojan Stadium. Scalzitti went on
the lead the team in shots with four for the afternoon.
