ANDERSON, S.C. - Dropping its first South Atlantic Conference match of the season on Wednesday, Anderson University women's soccer returns to action on Saturday, as the Trojans travel to Lenoir-Rhyne. Kickoff from the Moretz Sports -Athletic Complex is set for 2:30 p.m.
The Trojans
AU fell to 1-1-4 in conference play after a 4-1 loss to Newberry as
the Trojans sit in a three-way tie for seventh place in the SAC
with Carson-Newman (2-2-1) and Catawba (2-3-1). The trio currently
holds seven points in the standings, six points behind conference
leaders Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate. On the season, Anderson has
scored just as many goals as its opponents on the season (15) and
in conference matches (7).
Senior forward Krystal Goss continues to lead the AU offense with 10 points on the year. Goss notched her fourth assist of the year when freshman Helena Moore deflected a free kick into the Newberry net for the Trojans' lone goal on the afternoon. Moore joins classmates Emily Perez and Madison Taylor with two goals apiece, as the trio chases Goss and redshirt sophomore Faith Johannes for the team-lead in goals with three.
Freshman goalkeeper Sadie Lancaster has made the last two starts in goal for the Trojans, making 11 saves and recording her first career shutout against Tusculum last Sunday. Lancaster has now seen action in three contests and carries a 1.75 goals against average in over 205 minutes of work.
The Bears
L-R has shined throughout the season, entering Saturday's
matchup with a 7-2-1 overall and record and 4-0-1 conference mark
that currently ties the Bears with Wingate for the top spot in the
league. More impressively, the Lenoir-Rhyne is 5-0 at home,
outscoring its opponents 17-4 at the Moretz Sports - Athletic
Complex. In the most recent National Soccer Coaches of America
Association/Continental Tire Southeast Poll, the Bears are the
highest-ranked SAC team coming in at No. 4.
After a draw with Wingate to open SAC play, L-R has put together a five-match winning streak with four conference victories. Most recently, the Bears are coming off a 6-0 rout over Mars Hill on Wednesday night in Hickory.
Sophomore Garcelle Alequine leads Lenoir-Rhyne with six goals, 16 points and 33 shots on the season. Classmate Leah Mullins closely follows Alequine with five goals, 15 points and 30 shots, as she leads the team in assists with five. The duo is responsible for 48-percent of the goals scored by the Bears this season as they equal the amount of goals scored by L-R's opponents.
Three different goalkeepers have seen action this season, as junior Genny Little has made four starts and played in over 514 minutes. Little has stopped 24 shots and carries a 1.05 goals against average with two shutouts. Junior Tessa Lukens and freshman Andrea Leano has made a combined five starts with 17 saves between the two goalkeepers.
The Series
Since joining the SAC in 2010, the Trojans have not beaten
Lenoir-Rhyne in four tries. Last season, L-R captured a 2-0 win in
the regular season finale at Trojan Stadium.
