Women’s Soccer Adds Three for 2013-14

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson head women's soccer coach Samar Azem has announced the addition of three new student-athletes to the 2013 squad. The trio of newcomers includes a forward and a pair of attacking midfielders that possess a wealth of quality experience both on the local and regional levels, as well as nationally and internationally.

Name: Nicole Bulding
Position: Forward
Club Team: South Carolina United FC
High School: Blythewood High School
Hometown: Pembroke Pines, Fla.
Intended major: Kinesiology

Nicole comes to Anderson following a versatile playing career at the United States club level, as well as on the international level. She lettered two years at Colegio Jorge Washington in Cartagena, Colombia, where she led her team to a SACS championship and lettered another year at Mount Dora Academy in Sorrento, Fla.

In the United States, Bulding competed with the Florida Soccer Alliance for two years, where she led the team in assists. She then moved to South Carolina where she played under Coach Phil Savitz at the South Carolina United Football Club before suffering a youth career-ending injury.

Azem on Bulding: "Nicole is coming back from a tough injury and some time off, but she has a wealth of experience and a strong technical base behind her, as well as a compelling drive to compete in our program. Her drive, knowledge, and technical ability will play a key role as we move forward with a very young team."

Name: Brianne Truelove
Position: Attacking Midfield
Club Team: Atlanta Fire United 95 Gold
High School: North Hall High School
Hometown: Murrayville, Ga.
Intended major: Kinesiology

Truelove is an attacking midfielder from the AFU 95 Gold team and joins the list of newcomers after attending a Samar Azem Anderson Soccer Academy and making a strong impression on the coaching staff. During her time with AFU, Truelove assisted the team in winning the Mountain Cup as well as the very competitive Atlanta cup. In addition, her club team finished as runners- up in the Norcross Nike Cup.

She helped lead North Hall High to a 6-6-2 record last season, posting three assists and a pair of goals for the Trojans.

Azem on Truelove: "Brianne comes from a strong playing background at a top level club. She's an incredibly hard worker and a terrific young lady who will bring a strong dimension to our possession orientated sessions and style of play."

Name: Paige Gowans-Smith
Position: Attacking Midfield
Club Team: Liverpool Ladies FC
High School: Holy Cross Catholic High School/Runshaw College
Hometown: Chorley, Lancashire, England
Intended major: Kinesiology

Gowans-Smith, Azem's first international recruit, arrives following an extensive career in English youth soccer. Prior to arriving at Liverpool Ladies Football Club, Gowans-Smith competed with Preston North End Ladies. During her time at both clubs she was named the "Player's Player" and the "Managers Player," as well as earning a position as the Liverpool Ladies FC captain.

During her first year at Preston North End, Gowans-Smith helped lead the team to a league title, as the squad claimed the winning the League Cup for the second consecutive season.

The incoming midfielder also won the British Champions Title in 2010-2011, while at Runshaw College Academy. Her team was then honored as the North West England Champions in the same season.

Azem on Gowans-Smith: "Paige is a very smart player. She watches the game, understands it and uses that to her advantage. She will bring a lot of diversity to our style of play with a great first touch and an uncanny ability to create attacking opportunities within our style of play. With our personnel, that will cause a lot of problems for teams."

Anderson is slated to begin the 2013 campaign with a pair of scrimmages and opens the regular season at home versus Rollins College on Sept. 7.
