Trojans Roll Past Coker

ANDERSON, S.C. - Freshman forward Danielle Boltin notched a hat trick in just her second collegiate outing to help lead the Anderson women's soccer team to a 9-1 win past visiting Coker in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.

The Trojans stayed perfect on the young season, improving to 2-0, while the Cobras fell to 0-2.

"It was a good team effort and win," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "It is nice to see our young players get a chance to get in the game and score. This kind of effort shows that the players are committing to the system."

Anderson extended its home win streak to seven matches by combining a stellar offensive outing and a solid defensive effort, with Boltin leading the way in the scoring column.

The Trojans applied the offensive pressure early, with sophomore Ashley Kleinberg placing a cross into the box less than two minutes into the contest to force a corner kick and fellow sophomore Joelle Purinton working free for a breakaway attempt in the fifth minute that Cobra keeper Carrie Hudnall blocked.

Sophomore Carrie Settle triggered the scoring for AU in the 19th minute with a header off a corner kick from the right side off the foot of junior Britta Widenhouse. Purinton notched her first goal of the 2010 campaign five minutes later by working free down the middle of the pitch and got past Hudnall for a shot from the left side that settled in the back of the net to record her second career game-winning score.

The Trojan defense surrendered its first goal of the season when Coker freshman Emily Morrow collected a deflection off AU keeper Maddison McLendon and managed to get the ball in the net.

Junior Korrin Kelly gave AU some breathing room at the 31:40 mark when she lofted a high shot from the right side that went over the keeper, bounced off the left post and ricocheted into the goal.

Freshman Krystal Goss scored her second goal in as many outings when she placed an indirect kick just off Hudnall's fingertips and between the pipes in the 42nd minute to ignite a three-goal outburst in a four-minute span. Boltin followed by working free and placing a left-footed shot in the net at the 43:11 mark, while Kelly posted her second score of the afternoon with just 12 seconds remaining before halftime, giving AU a 6-1 lead.

Boltin added scores in the 62nd and 80th minute of the contest to round out her memorable afternoon, while senior leader Katelyn Conover recorded her first goal of the season with less than three minutes left in the contest.

The Trojans dominated possession by outshooting Coker 23-4, including 16 shots in the opening frame and recording a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

McLendon earned the win between the pipes for Anderson in her debut and recorded two saves on the afternoon. Senior Carrie Hudnall absorbed the setback for the Cobras, surrendering six goals in the opening half, while junior Kerrie Cribb was between the pipes for the second stanza.

Anderson concludes its season-opening three-game homestand by playing host to King College in the opening match of a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday at Trojan Stadium. Kick-off for the twinbill is slated for 2 p.m.
