Spurlin Spurs Trojans To SAC Championship Opening Round Win Over Mars Hill; 64-56

Anderson, S.C. — Anderson University sophomore Jalyn Spurlin came off the bench to spark the Trojans and help lift Anderson to a, 64-56, win over the  No. 12 seeded Marsh Hill Lions on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Flying J Championship opening round at the Abney Athletic Center. The Trojans improve to 13-10 overall, while the Lions finish the season 2-18 overall.

"Glad to get the first win under our belt for the tournament," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "At this point you can throw records out the window. Mars Hill proved that tonight by playing a great game."

"There are no secrets, it comes down to playing defense and scoring baskets," emphasized Barbaree." We will take the win and work towards preparing for the next game."

KEY STATS

- Anderson outrebound Mars Hill, 59-37.
- Anderson shot 37.9 (22-58) percent from the field, while the Trojans held Mars Hill to 26.9 percent (18-67).
- The Black and Gold never trailed the Lions
- The Trojans recorded 10 blocked shots.

KEY TROJANS

- Jalyn Spurlin scored a team high 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out one assist and one steal in 21 minutes of action.
Taylor Hair netted 12 points, while pulling down four rebounds. Hair went a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.
- Britney Bailey ripped down 16 rebounds and chipped in three points.
- Maggie Campbell scored six points after draining 2-of-3 three-point baskets in six minutes of play.

Anderson has reached the quarterfinal round of the SAC Tournament, since joining the conference in 2010 (11th straight)

FIRST QUARTER

- AU outscored Mars Hill, 10-6.

SECOND QUARTER

AU outscored the Lions, 21-8.
-AU reserve Campbell hit two three-point baskets in the quarter.
-AU's Spurlin chipped in four points and grabbed four rebounds in the period.

 THIRD QUARTER

-Mars Hill outscored AU, 19-14.
-Spurlin scored seven of AU's 14 points in the third quarter.
-Mars Hill Marshall scored nine of her game-high 24 points.
-The Lions cut the lead to 12 heading into the final period.

 FOURTH QUARTER

- Anderson extended its lead to 14 on a made jumper by McKenzie Gadson.
-The Lions cut the lead to five points on Alexis Pardue's three-point basket, with 2:22 to play.
- The Trojans made 9-of-14 from the free throw line over the final 2 minutes, with Gadson going 3-for-4.

-Anderson travels to fourth-seeded UVA Wise Cavaliers on Monday. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm.
