Trojans Open New Year with Home Win over Francis Marion; 67-49

Anderson, S.C— The Anderson University women's basketball team opened the New Year with a decisive home win over nonconference opponent Francis Marion, 67-49, on Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center. Anderson improves to 5-3 overall while the Patriots slip to 0-1 overall.

"It was great to play again and to have a chance to work on things, said head coach Jonathon Barbaree.

"I thought our defense was a step in the right direction," added Barbaree. "We have been focused on that since our return from break and will continue to work on it."

KEY STATS

- Anderson shot 18-of-22 (81.8%) with Francis Marion connecting on 5-of-7 for the game. Anderson shot 41.4 percent.
- Anderson outrebounded the Patriots 57-38.
- Francis Marion shot just 17.4% (4-of-23) from behind the arc.
- The Trojans outscored Francis Marion, 21-10, in the opening frame.

KEY TROJANS

Samantha Michel came off the bench to score a team-high 10 points and rip down a team-high 10 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season. She also dished out one assists, had two blocks and was credited with a steal in just 17 minutes of action.
- Taylor Hair scored nine points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal.
- Britney Bailey contributed eight points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots in her starting debut.
- J'Mya Cutter dropped in eight points, grabbed five rebounds, while adding an assist, a block and two steals to her stat line.
- Nelliah Wilson chipped in eight points on 2-of-2 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line. Wilson also snagged two rebounds and was credited with a steal in six minutes of play.

NOTES

- Today's game was Francis Marion's first game of the season, as the Peach Belt Conference gets underway in the New Year.

FIRST QUARTER

- Francis Marion scored the opening basket at the 9:04 mark.
- Hair's made layup to tie the game at 2-2 began a 21-8 run in the opening frame.

SECOND QUARTER

- AU outscored the Patriots 12-9 during the low scoring period.
- Bailey led the Trojans with four points, two rebounds and a blocked shot during the second stanza.

THIRD QUARTER

- AU took an 18-point lead with less than 20 seconds to go in the third period.
- Michel scored six of her 10 points while grabbing four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot in five minutes of play.

FOURTH QUARTER

- Wilson was perfect from the field and the line in her six-minutes of action, scoring eight points.
-Anderson went 8-for-8 during the quarter.
- The Black and Gold built its largest lead of the game at 24 with 1:44 left to play.
- The Patriots went on a 6-0 run to end the game to set the final score, 67-49.
