Paced By Michel’s Third Straight 20-plus Scoring Output, Trojans Defeat Cobras; 73-59

Anderson, S.C.- Paced by Samantha Michel's third straight 20-plus scoring game, the Anderson University basketball team had three players record double-doubles in a home win over South Atlantic Conference opponent Coker, 73-59, on Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center. The Trojans move to 9-5 overall and 8-4 in SAC play, while the Cobras fall to 4-9 overall and 4-8 in conference action.

"Another really strong effort from these five young women today," boasted head coach Barbaree. "They have done an excellent job of following the game plan each game. I especially want point how Samantha has stepped in and given us a huge lift with not only her excellent play, but also her voice on the court."

"Defensively we maintained our focus through the key spots in the game and made solid adjustments," said Barbaree.

"We have a great opportunity with the next stretch of games and we are going to need that focus and effort to continue," added Barbaree.

 KEY STATS

- Anderson shot 31-of-78 (39.7 percent) from the field on the day, with Coker shooting 22-67 (32.8 percent).
- The Trojans shot 35.7 percent (five-for-14) from three-point range, the Cobras shot 22.7 percent (five-for-22) from beyond the arc.
- Anderson outrebounded the Cobras, 54-36.
- The Black and Gold hit six-of-10 (60.0%) at the free throw line, while Coker went 10-for-10(100.0%).

KEY TROJANS

Samantha Michel had a game-high 26 points, while grabbing 13 rebounds. Michel was credited with four blocked shots and three steals.
 -Kaitlin Bailey scored 16 points and pulled down a career high 12 rebounds, recording her first double-double. Bailey also dished out four assist and recorded one blocked shot.
Xan Rowland contributed 12 points, draining four three-point baskets, while dishing out a career high seven assists.
-Britney Bailey added 12 points, ripped down 15 rebounds and dished out a career high seven assists.
- J'Mya Cutter chipped in seven points, grabbed six rebounds, while dropping four dimes.  

NOTES

- Today's win was AU's 14th straight over the Cobras.
- The Black and Gold dished out a season high 23 assists.

FIRST QUARTER

- Anderson outscored Coker, 20-17.
- AU's B. Bailey's layup at the 9:06 mark was the first basket of the game.
- The Trojans built a 10-point lead, after a three-point basket by Rowland with 6:19 remaining in the first stanza.
- Coker cut the lead to three, after a 13-6 run.

SECOND QUARTER

- The Trojans outscored Coker, 19-0.
-Anderson pushed its lead to 14 on a made free throw by K. Bailey with 1:03 to go.
-Coker's Raya Coley hit a layup in the waning seconds of the second quarter to set the half-time score, 39-27.

THIRD QUARTER

-AU's 18-8 run gave the Black and Gold its largest lead of the game at 22 points.
-Michel scored nine points and had two blocks during the third period.

FOURTH QUARTER

-Coker outscored Anderson 20-14
-Coker Coley's jumper brought the Cobras to within 16 with 4:32 remaining.
-AU bumped the lead back to 19 on several occasions, before a 5-0 run by the Cobras to end the game set the final score, 73-59.
