Men 3rd, Women 4th at Cross Country Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Anderson men's cross country team claimed third place, while the women's squad posted a fourth-place finish at the Conference Carolinas Championships hosted by Queens University of Charlotte Friday afternoon at McAlpine Park. In the women's 5K race, Anderson sophomore Whitney Bishoff trimmed nearly a minute off last year's record-setting effort, recording yet another record time of 18:00 to win the individual title by 28 seconds. Bishoff jumped out to a 30-meter lead then extended her lead even further to finish faster than the next racer, Jessica Neville. With the title, Bishoff claimed Conference Runner of the Year honors for the second straight year. Bishoff's victory marks the second consecutive individual conference title for the Winder, Ga. native and marked the six straight year that Anderson has won the women's individual title. Freshman Emily Eckroth (20:33) narrowly missed earning all-conference accolades with her 17th place finish. Host Queens University placed four runners in the top 12 to win the team title with 50 points to edge last year's champion, Lees-McRae. Limestone was third with103 points, Anderson was fourth with 126 points, and Converse was fifth with 127 points. "It wasn't our best race on the women's side," Anderson head coach Randy Greer said. "But we knew it was going to be tough. Whitney ran another great race." In the men's 8K race, Anderson placed three runners in the top 25. Alex Jordan (25:57) finished seventh, earning second-team all-conference honors. Alex Pena (27:44) finished 21st, while Nigel Reynolds (27:46) placed just behind in 22nd. Queens took the top six spots en route to claiming the team title with a perfect 15 points. Lees-McRae was second with 79 points. Anderson was third with 114 points, and Mount Olive finished fourth with 116 points. Queens' Oscar Ogwaro led the field of 82 with a time of 24:18 on the 8,000-meter course. The 4:54 paced time matches the current best run at a Conference Carolinas Championship, a record set by former Queens runner Daniel Kanyaruhuru in 2007. "I was very please with the guys' effort," Greer added. "They ran exceptionally well. But we still have room for improvement. Alex ran a great race and held off some really strong runners." Women 1.
