Womens Cross Country Claims Win at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Following strong outings at both previous meets in the 2009 campaign, the Anderson womens cross country team ran away with the college division title at the 23rd annual Winthrop-Asics Cross Country Invitational, Saturday morning at the Winthrop Farm course. Due to injuries, the AU men's squad was unable to record a team score for the event. "It was a pretty good day," said Anderson head coach Randy Greer. "We posted close to a perfect score on the women's side. Now we have a week off to heal up and rest a little." Anderson sophomore Whitney Bishoff, the reigning Conference Carolinas Runner of the Week, won the women's title with a time of 18:40.98 in the 5k event. The win marked the Winder, Ga., native's second win in as many weeks, as well as the team's second straight win. The Trojans swept the top four spots in the college division, as junior Lynne Flint (20.32.30), junior Chelsea Rogers (20:45.42) and freshman Emily Eckroth ( 20:50.32) finished second, third and fourth, respectively. A pair of freshmen, Isabel Berry (23:04.87) and Amanda Johnson (26:44.64) completed the course in ninth and 23rd, to round out the scoring for AU. Anderson senior Alex Jordan (27:05.12) wrapped up the day with the sixth best time on the men's side, while freshman Alex Pena (28:42.34) posted the 11th best time in the college division and sophomore Jonathan Stephens notched the 12th fastest time at 28:45.30. Freshman Ryne Welch finished 22nd with a time of 32:09.33. Anderson has a week off from competition before getting back in action on Friday, Oct. 2nd at the UNC Charlotte Invitational.
