Cross Country Teams Preparing For Post-Season

ANDERSON, S.C. -- With just one meet remaining before the post-season, expectations are high for the Anderson University cross country teams. "We believe both teams have a great chance to qualify for the nationals," said Anderson head coach Randy Greer. "Both teams are ranked in the region and we expect to make serious runs in both regional races at the qualifying spots." After running in Atlanta this Saturday, both teams will turn their focus to the CVAC Championships Oct. 21 in Spartanburg and the regional meet Nov. 4 at Wingate. The women's team has battled through numerous injuries to record two top-three finishes. "The women's team is just starting to come together," Greer said. "I think we will reach our full potential before the CVAC meet." The best finish for the women this season was a second-place finish at Lander. The women's team is led by two-time CVAC champion Jennifer Hitt and 2005 Freshman of the Year Diana Willard. "Diana and Jennifer both have been nominated for CVAC Runner of the Week," Greer said. "Kasey (Harold) ran a career-best 6K (23:54) at the Pre-Nationals. She is assuming a leadership role both on and off the course. Megan (Deaton), our only freshman, is getting accustomed to the 6K distance. Her times continue to improve. Ashten (Guffee) is running to the potential we saw in her when we recruited her. Hope (Wheeler) has been battling injuries all season. We hope she will be a 100 percent soon." The men's team has recorded three top-three finishes. Nate Parsons, who was named CVAC Runner of the Week Sept. 7, has been the team's leading runner this season. "The men's team has surprised a lot of people, including themselves," Greer said. "This is the best men's team we've ever had at Anderson." The men's team has 10 runners on the roster. "The biggest surprise has been Jason (Bryan), who is running really strong right now," Greer said. "Ethan (Schaffner) and Jeremy (Hunsaker) both continue to get faster and should peak at the right time. (Freshman) Alex (Jordan) could potentially be our No. 1 runner before he graduates. Matt (Atkinson) is a strong veteran runner who has put together a string of good races this season."
