Men's Distance Medley Team Sets School Record at South Carolina Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Anderson University men's track and field team completed the South Carolina Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 28) in Columbia, S.C.

On day one, freshman Spain Vaughan set an Anderson school record in the mile run with a time of 4:13.38. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Simeon Respress recorded a distance of 6.76m in the long jump.

Another Anderson school record was broken this weekend, as the distance medley team of Thomas Sutcliffe, Ben Molitor, David Mahnke, and Spain Vaughan took fifth place in a time of 10:15.04.

Ty Nelson came in second place in the 5000m with a time of 15:20.45. Michael Burgess completed the event in 15:47.88 for sixth place, while David Williams finished eighth in a time of 15:58.90.

In the field, Simeon Respress came in sixth place in the high jump, totaling a distance of 1.85m.

"This weekend was fantastic for both teams," said coach Kevin Eagle. "We showed so much improvement across the board from two weeks ago. Just about every athlete had a huge breakthrough that shows what they are truly capable of the next time out. We broke four school records and provisionally qualified a relay to the national meet. I am extremely proud on how this team performed!"

The Trojans will be back in action next weekend (Feb. 4 – Feb. 5) as they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the Camel City Invitational. Results can be found at www.autrojans.com.
