Trojans Fall To Belmont Abbey

WILSON, N.C. -- No. 3 seed Belmont Abbey College scored eight runs in the final two innings to rally for a 14-10 victory over No. 6 seed Anderson University in the second round of the Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament Friday at historic Fleming Stadium. The victory staved off elimination for the Crusaders (18-22) and handed the Trojans (18-33) their first loss of the tourney. Both teams will play in elimination games on Saturday, with Anderson playing at 11 a.m. against the loser of Friday's final game and Belmont Abbey facing No. 1 seed Mount Olive at 3 p.m. For seven innings, it appeared that Anderson might be pulling off its second straight upset. The Trojans erased an early 4-0 deficit with a six-run third inning, then added four more runs over the middle innings to take a 10-6 lead into the eighth. However, the Crusaders -- last year's tournament champions -- proved they would not give up their crown that easily. With one out, Roberto Sanchez was hit by a pitch, and Justin Baxley followed with a double off the wall to drive in Sanchez. Anderson brought in reliever B.J. Scarborough (2-2), who gave up a single, a sacrifice fly and a walk. With two outs and two on, Belmont Abbey inserted redshirt freshman Matt Mazzolla into the lineup as a pinch-hitter, and the Bloomfield, N.J., resident took a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left-center for a three-run homer that put his team back in front, 11-10. The home run was just the second of the year for Mazzolla. Belmont Abbey added three more runs in the ninth on three hits, two wild pitches and a passed ball. Tim Dye provided the last of those three runs with a double into the right field corner. Anderson managed to get two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Brett DiPasquale got a strikeout to end the game. DiPasquale worked the final two innings for his first save of the year, protecting the win for Joey Kopp (3-1), who worked three innings, allowing two runs while striking out five. Clutch hitting played a key role in the win for the Crusaders. Of Belmont Abbey's 14 runs, nine of them scored on two-out hits. Dye had three hits on the afternoon, while Baxley, Roland Rodriguez, Spencer Sobol, and Vinnie Santoemma each added two for the Crusaders. Baxley also had four RBI, two of them on his fourth home run of the year in the sixth inning. Anderson was led by Blake May, who had three hits and two RBI. Erick Sanderson had two hits, while Ryan Saxon and Jonathan Romero each contributed a pair of RBI, those coming on doubles in the Trojans' six-run second inning.
