LAURINBURG, N.C. -- The Anderson baseball team dropped the opening contest of a three-game Conference Carolinas series, 13-8, to St. Andrews and trailed the nightcap, 7-2 when the game was suspended due to darkness at Clark Field. The two teams will conclude play of the halted seven-inning game on Sunday starting at 12:30 p.m., followed by the series finale approximately 30 minutes later. St. Andrews improved to 3-20-1 overall and 2-10 in the conference. The Trojans dipped to 8-17 and 4-8 after stranding 10 runners on base. Anderson took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as senior Derek Hipp led off the game with single and later scored on another single by junior Ryan Saxon. St. Andrews answered with five runs in the home half of the first to take the lead for the rest of the game. Sophomore Michael Ficarro capped the surge with a two-run triple. The Knights added two more runs in the second before Anderson rallied to within one, 7-6, with five runs in the top of the third. Freshman Brett Scarberry highlighted the Trojan frame with a two-run double. SAPC followed with the next six runs to pull away that included three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the seventh. Anderson closed the final deficit to five with a pair of unearned runs in the eighth. Knights' freshman John Allen Renn picked up his first collegiate win in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief of sophomore starter Tyler Tuttle. A trio of Trojans had two hits including Hipp, Saxon, and sophomore Ryan Kirkland. Senior Brady Peele was tagged with the loss allowing seven runs on eight hits in only 1 2/3 innings.
