Trojans Split Doubleheader with Falcons

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson baseball team's explosive offense led the Trojans to a split in a crucial Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Pfeiffer University Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Trojans' potent offense carried them to a 13-12 win in the opener, as Anderson snapped a brief two-game skid with the victory, while Pfeiffer claimed the nightcap by a count of 7-2. Anderson moved to 16-31 overall and 9-13 in Conference Carolinas and needs to win tomorrow in order to secure a berth in the six-team conference tournament in mid-April, while Pfeiffer (23-24, 13-10 Conference Carolinas) already has a spot locked up. The Trojans snapped a 9-9 tie with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and held off a late charge by the Falcons to claim the series-opening win. Senior Derek Hipp ignited the rally by reaching base with one out and scored the go-ahead run when Ryan Saxon drew a bases-loaded walk. Ryan Kirkland followed by punching a single through the left side to plate Chance Thomas with the second run. Freshman Erick Sanderson then put the ball in play and added two RBI to give Anderson a 13-9 advantage. The Trojans would need all the runs, as Sharpe drew a leadoff walk in the eighth for Pfeiffer, with Pearl and Pou following with back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. Anderson hurler B. J. Scarborough recorded the second out on a strikeout, but an error by the Trojans allowed two Flacon runners to cross the plate, pulling the visitors within 13-11 after eight innings. Anderson was unable to push any runs across in the bottom of the inning, and Pfeiffer cut the Trojans' cushion to just one run when Shoemaker led off the ninth frame with a triple and scored on Sharpe's one-out single. But Sharpe was stranded at second when Scarborough induced Pou to fly out to AU's Jonathan Romano in right field with Pearl on first. Brady Peele picked up his third win of the season for the Trojans, while Tuttle ttook the loss for Pfeiffer. The second contest of the afternoon saw the Falcons jump out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning and add a solo run in the third and two in the fourth, while the Trojans managed to get just one runner into scoring position through the first three innings. Pfeiffer added a pair of runs in the fourth inning before Anderson plated two in the bottom of the frame. Third baseman Blake May reached on an error with one out and crossed the plate on Saxon's double to right center and he scored on Romano's two-out single to right field, leaving AU looking at a four-run deficit. The Falcons added an unearned run in the seventh inning to set the final margin. Anderson and Pfeiffer each close out their conference slate with a single contest slated to start at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
