Trojan Baseball Splits with Knights

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- The Anderson baseball team dropped a darkness-suspended contest from Saturday, 10-8, then rebounded to claim the final of the three-game Conference Carolinas set by a score of 9-5 Sunday afternoon at Clark Field. The two teams had to complete the middle game of the weekend series on Sunday as the contest was halted in the middle of the fourth inning due to darkness on Saturday. The Knights (4-20-1 Overall, 3-10 Conf.) led by five, 7-2, overnight but the Trojans (8-18, 4-9) rallied to tie the game before SAPC's Josh Axelsen produced a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to break a late tie. Anderson took an early 2-0 lead with one run in each of the first two innings but St. Andrews stormed back to take a 7-2 advantage before the game was suspended overnight in the middle of the fourth by scoring three runs in the second and four more in the third.Sophomore Blake May and junior Ryan Saxon started the scoring for the Trojans with consecutive two-out hits in the top of the first. May ripped a double and scored on a single by Saxon. Freshman Erick Sanderson doubled up the visitor's advantage by leading off the second with a single and later scoring on a balk. St. Andrews took the lead in the bottom of the second. After the Knights loaded the bases on a hit batsman and two walks, Manny Williams recorded a three-run double in the right-center field gap. SAPC tacked on four more runs in the third with five hits. Junior starter Jack Crawford was eligible for the win having tossed the first four innings but was unable to continue after the overnight delay and Anderson took advantage. Crawford allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five in the no-decision. Anderson fought back on Sunday to take an 8-7 lead with six runs in the fifth after sending 10 batters to the plate. The Trojan comeback featured a two-run single by sophomore Thomas Padro. SAPC responded with the last rally in the seesaw battle, scoring the final three runs in the sixth. After Manny Williams reached on a fielding error and junior Michael Cantwell singled, senior Samson Williams knotted the score with a double off the centerfield fence that scored his brother. Axelsen followed with his seeing-eyed single through the left side of the infield that plated both Cantwell and Samson Williams. The Trojans threatened in their final at-bat, putting the first two batters on base but Knight's senior hurler David Carbonell retired the final three batters with two strikeouts and a fly out. Carbonell (1-3) was credited with the win, tossing two innings of scoreless relief to finish off the game. Junior Brett Campbell only allowed one hit and two runs (one earned) over 2 1/3 innings, but was tagged with the loss for Anderson. In the series finale, Anderson senior starter David Richardson tossed a complete-game to lead the Trojans, who improved to 9-18 overall and 5-9 in the conference. Richardson (1-1) baffled the Knights batters early allowing just one hit over the first five innings and earned the complete-game win. Richardson scattered eight hits and only allowed three earned runs while finishing with eight strikeouts. In a game that started out as a pitcher's duel between Richardson and Knights' freshman Kyle Tate, AU senior Derrick Hipp knocked in the only run of the first five innings with a solo home run to lead off the third inning. Hipp's round-tripper was his third of the season. Anderson exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to increase its lead to 8-0. The Trojans tagged six hits in the outburst that was highlighted by back-to-back run scoring doubles by freshman Erik Sanderson and sophomore Jonathan Romano. Manny Williams broke up Richardson's shutout bid in the home half of the sixth using his speed. Williams, who singled, later stole third base and scored on the play when junior Michael Cantwell was caught in a run-down. Manny Williams drove in the Knights' next run with a single in the eighth. The Trojans tacked on more insurance run in the top of the ninth before the Knights scored three runs in the last stanza with the help of two Anderson errors before Richardson recorded the final out with a groundout. Hipp and sophomore Blake May both recorded three hits to lead the 14-hit Trojan offense. Hipp also scored twice and registered two RBI. Tate (0-4) took the loss after being ruffed up in the sixth, allowing six runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 while striking out seven. The Trojans are back in action on Thursday, March 18, when the Trojans visit South Atlantic foe Carson-Newman.
