Anderson upsets top seeded Mount Olive

WILSON, N.C. -- Anderson University pulled off a shocker in the Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament for the second straight year on Thursday, upsetting nationally-ranked and No. 1 seed Mount Olive College, 10-7, in a first-round game at Fleming Stadium. Anderson squeezed into the tournament as the No. 6 seed by winning its final regular season game, bringing a 17-32 overall record - including 3-18 on the road - into its contest against Mount Olive, ranked No. 11 nationally with a 34-8 mark. However, Anderson came into the 2009 tournament in the same situation - a No. 7 seed facing nationally ranked MOC - and pulled off a 4-2 upset in the first round. This year was no different, as Anderson scored five runs in the first three innings and never looked back. With the win, Anderson advances to a 3 p.m. game on Friday against No. 3 seed Belmont Abbey. Mount Olive falls into an 11 a.m. elimination game against Barton College. In inning one, Mount Olive appeared it would produce the expected rout, scoring three times, two on a long home run by Airlon Vinson. However, Anderson starter David Richardson (5-3) shut out the nation's highest scoring team over his four remaining innings of work, and his team would soon take the lead. Anderson completely erased Mount Olive's lead in the top of the second, scoring three times on three hits and three Mount Olive errors. Ryan Saxon and Ryan Kirkland produced back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning and set the stage for the rally. One inning later, Anderson took the lead for good when Blake May walked to lead off the third and Saxon followed with his eighth home run of the year, a shot to left off Mount Olive starter Sean Lydon (7-3). In the fifth inning, Anderson increased its advantage to 7-3 on a two-out, two-run single by Thomas Padro, and in the seventh, Anderson increased its lead to six runs after a solo home run by Erick Sanderson and an RBI single by Derek Hipp. Mount Olive's offense finally started rolling in the bottom of the seventh, getting an RBI single by Jesse Lancaster and a two-run homer by league co-player of the year Jeremy Nowak. A walk and another single by Joseph Westbrook set the stage for the Mount Olive rally to continue, but Anderson brought in reliever TJ Estes, who got a pop-up from Topher Ellis to end the inning. Both teams scored one run in the ninth, but Mount Olive could get no closer. Estes went 2 1/3 innings to post his first save of the year. Ryan Kirkland paced Anderson offensively with three hits, while Saxon and Padro each added a pair. Michael Knox and Westbrook each had three hits for Mount Olive, with Lancaster and Nowak chipping in a pair each.
