Trojans Roll Past Brevard in Mid-Week Action

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Using an offensive outburst and strong pitching, Anderson rolled past Brevard College, 15-3, in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. On a sunny but brutally cold afternoon that saw the wind chill dip into the mid-20s, the Trojans' explosive offense roared to life by banging out 15 hits, including five for extra bases, while freshman right-hander Erick Sanderson surrendered just four hits over six innings to pick up the win. "The conditions were tough," Anderson head coach Joe Miler. "But we came out and swung the bats." Brevard (0-1) quickly jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the opening frame, when cleanup hitter Kellen Momen hit a slicing two-run home run over the right field fence with two outs. BC junior Stephen Mullis followed with a single through the right side but Anderson's Derek Hipp made a running catch in left center to end the Tornado's threat. The Trojans (3-2) took advantage of three singles and an error by the Tornados to counter with two runs in the bottom of the second to knot the score. Back-to-back singles by Matt Hill and Blake May put the tying run on base and catcher Brett Scarberry moved both runners into scoring position with a two-strike sacrifice bunt. Jonathan Romano followed with a chopper to third, but Hill was thrown out attempting to score from third, bringing Thomas Padro to the plate with runners on the corners. The 5-foot-11 sophomore came through with a two-out single up the middle to score May from third and keep the inning alive. Hipp then laced a hard grounder to BC second baseman Kramer Clark but his throw was wide of first, allowing Hipp to reach first and Romano to cross the plate with the tying run. Anderson took the lead for good with two runs in the third inning as senior Trent Still and Ryan Saxon opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Brevard's pitching settled down and recorded two strikeouts, but the Trojans struck again with two outs when Saxon scored the second run of the frame as BC outfielder Kellen Momen misplayed Scarberry's pop fly to shallow right field. After the Trojan defense set Brevard down in order for the second straight inning, Anderson blew the game open by posting 11 runs on eight hits in the fourth. Kirkland ignited the explosion by beating out a hopper to shortstop with one out and Still followed with his first homer of the season over the right-field fence. The AU offense picked up three more extra base hits en route to their biggest scoring inning of the season. Kirkland and Saxon each notched three hits on the afternoon, while Still went 2-for-3 versus the Tornados. Sophomore shortstop Thomas Padro recorded four RBI, including three in the decisive fourth inning. Sanderson went six full innings in his second appearance of the season, striking out five and walking just three as the Hanahan, S.C., native improved to 1-0, while junior Jacob White (0-1) absorbed the loss for Brevard. Junior hurler Elliott Tolley pitched the seventh inning for the Trojans in relief, recording two strikeouts. Anderson will get back on the diamond Friday, when the Trojans welcome rival Erskine to Memorial Stadium with first-pitch slated for 2:30 p.m. Box Score Season Stats
