Trojans Rally Past Limestone-Take Series

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson baseball team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim a 6-5 come-from-behind win past Limestone in Conference Carolinas action Monday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. In a contest that was postponed until tonight due to the threat of severe weather in the Anderson area Sunday afternoon, Anderson (13-23, 7-10 Conference Carolinas) trailed 5-3 entering the eighth frame, but sophomore Blake May and junior Ryan Saxon led off the inning with back-to-back singles. May moved to third on Ryan Kirkland's fly out to right and scored when freshman Erick Sanderson ripped a single through the left side of the infield. Designated hitter Tony Price, who entered the game in the sixth inning, stepped to the plate and drilled a shot that one-hopped the fence in center field to plate both Saxon and Sanderson with what turned out to be the winning run. The 6-foot freshman moved to third on the throw to the plate and after catcher Brett Scarberry was hit by a pitch, the Trojans had runners on the corners with one out but were unable to capitalize when Price was caught too far down the third base line and shortstop Thomas Padro went down on strikes to end the inning. The ninth inning saw AU hurler B.J. Scarborough record three strikeouts, but actually face four Saints' hitters, as second baseman David Christy struck out but reached base to lead off the inning when Scarberry was unable to corral the third strike behind the plate. Scarborough then caught Drew Lydon and Tim Welsh looking for two consecutive strikeouts and ended the game by inducing Cameron Ward to bounce out. Neither team was able to push a run across through the first four frames, but the pitcher's duel unraveled in the fifth when Limestone (11-22, 6-12 CC) scored four runs with two outs. Freshman Michael Hughey and Christy, each of whom had earlier been hit by a pitch, crossed the plate and Josh Troutman delivered a two-RBI single to give the saints a brief 4-0 advantage. But the four run cushion was short-lived as Anderson, which has won three of its last four, answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth on four hits. Sanderson was clipped by a pitch to lead off, and Price singled sharply back up the middle, with Scarberry laying down a bunt single to load the bases with no one out. Padro bounced into a fielder's choice that erased Scarberry at second, but Sanderson scored AU's first run of the contest. With two outs, Chance Thomas beat out an infield hit that scored Price and May singled to left to bring Padro across the plate and trim the deficit to 4-3. The Saints added a solo run in the sixth courtesy of two walks and a single to left off the bat of Luke Beasley to set up the final two innings. Scarborough tossed 3 2/3 innings of hitless baseball, while striking out three and not issuing a walk, improving to 2-0 on the season. The Trojans worked Limestone reliever Jordan Robinson (2-2) for three runs on three hits in just 1/3 of an inning, saddling him with the loss. The Trojans visit North Georgia tomorrow night before returning to Memorial Stadium Wednesday for a doubleheader versus Erskine, slated to start at 4 p.m. Box Score Season Statistics
