ANDERSON, S.C. -- The visiting Lander Bearcats scored four runs in the first three innings en route to handing Anderson a 5-2 setback on Senior Night in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Anderson (17-32) was looking to avenge an earlier road setback at the hands of the Bearcats (22-17), but Lander took advantage of control issues on the mound and loaded the bases with no outs before junior left-handed hurler came on in relief and retired three consecutive Bearcat hitters, but not before two LU runners crossed the plate. Lander added a pair of runs in the third frame to open a 4-0 lead, while the Trojans threatened in both the third and fourth innings but were unable to push any runs across the plate. Senior Derek Hipp ripped a two-out single through the right side in the third, stole second and moved to third when the throw went into center field, but he was stranded at third, and the Trojans loaded the bases with two out in the fourth, but were unable to capitalize. Anderson averted the shutout by notching a run with one out in the seventh inning, as designated hitter Matt Hill led off with a single through the left side. Freshman Tony Price came in as a pinch-runner and promptly stole second and went to third when the throw sailed into center field. He crossed the plate when shortstop Thomas Padro bounced back to the pitcher with one out. Each team added a solo run in the ninth inning, with Price again crossing the plate when Padro hit the ball back up the middle. Freshman Chanler Cox absorbed the loss for the Trojans, falling to 0-2 on the season after giving up the two runs on three hits in the third. Anderson opens the Conference Carolinas Tournament Thursday night as the sixth seed and will square off against top-seeded Mount Olive at 7 p.m. in Wilson, N.C.
