NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Anderson women's tennis team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Newberry, 5-4, in South Atlantic Conference action Monday afternoon at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
Anderson, which is ranked 49th nationally, improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while Newberry fell to 2-3 and 0-1 in the league.
The Trojan duo of Avery Owens and Camie Beaulieu-Brunet earned AU's lone doubles' victory and improved to 2-0 on the season by defeating the Wolves' Shannon McManus and Marina Ziehe, 8-4, at the No. 3 slot.
Owens notched her second win of the afternoon at No. 2 singles with a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 win over Romina Adum, while Hannah Ecleberry defeated Ziehe by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Lindsay Gregory and senior Marcela Gallegos each rallied from an opening-set loss to notch marathon wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Gregory dropped a first-set decision to Tara Lamers, but bounced back to win, 2-6, 6-3, 16-14, while Gallegos, who saw her first action since recovering from an injury last season, rallied to knock off Newberry's Shannon McManus, 4-6, 7-5, 16-14.
With the win, AU head coach Joey Eskridge notched his 100th victory at the helm of the Trojan program.
Anderson will get back on the courts Wednesday, when the Trojans visit Conference Carolinas-foe Limestone at 2 p.m.
