Trojan Tennis Earns Wins at ITA Tournament

SUMTER, S.C. - Members of the Anderson University men's and women's tennis teams garnered wins during the first two days of competition at the ITA Southeast Region Individual Tournament, held at the Palmetto Tennis Center Friday and Saturday.

Playing in the Men's "A" Flight Doubles, the Trojan tandem of senior Loic Ambroise and freshman Paul Calhoun edged Augusta State's Javier Capriles and Maxime Coulomb, 9-7, in Friday's opening round of 64 before falling to the Flagler duo of Bruno Padilho and Stephen Stolz, 8-3, on Saturday.

In Men's Singles Flight "A" action, AU's Krystof Gulbinovic defeated North Georgia's Mateus Camasmie in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 on Friday to advance to the round of 32, where he topped Young Harris' Joan Valls, 6-3, 6-1 on Saturday. Gulbinovic dropped a narrow, 7-5, 7-5 decision to Columbus State's Marco Almorin in the round of 16.

Anderson senior Daniel Gonzalez earned a pair of wins in Saturday's "A" Flight Singles Consolation Round, defeating Augusta State's Javier Capriles, 6-0, 6-1 and collecting a win when Mount Olive's Gabriel Santana retired due to illness, with Gonzalez leading, 6-2, 2-0.

On the women's side, freshman Alexandra Ebner and sophomore Lindsay Gregory teamed up to notch an 8-5 win past Converse College's Kasey Anderson and Olivia Self in Women's "A" Flight Doubles, then fell, 8-0, to the Armstrong Atlantic duo of Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa on Saturday.

Another newcomer, sophomore Karen Ching earned a pair of wins in the tourney, defeating Erskine's Mika Goyette in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in Women's "A" Flight action and advanced to the round of 16 with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Pfeiffer's Hannah Watson on Saturday. She fell, 6-1, 6-1 to Armstrong's Marlen Hacke later Saturday.

The event concludes Sunday.
