ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson women's tennis team was looking for its first win past rival Erskine since March 13, 2001, but fell just shy as the Flying Fleet claimed a narrow 5-4 victory Friday afternoon at the Max Grubbs Courts.
Anderson dropped to 6-3 with the setback, while Erskine improved to 9-1 on the season.
The Flying Fleet gained an early advantage by taking two wins on the doubles side, while the AU tandem of Julie Halbert and Marcela Gallegos earned its fifth consecutive win by defeating EC's Abby O'Reilly and Nikki Miller 9-7 at the No. 3 slot.
Freshman Lauren Trumbull improved to 7-1 on the season with her sixth straight victory, a three-set 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over Erskine's Abby O'Reilly at the No. 4 flight, while junior Shelby Anderson posted a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. five past Victoria Stephens. At the No. 6 flight, sophomore Emily Weiland notched her fourth consecutive win by defeating the Fleet's April Horne 6-3, 6-3.
But Erskine took wins at the top three spots to post its' 13th
consecutive victory past the Trojans.
Anderson will be looking to get back in the win column as the
Trojans play host to South Atlantic Conference opponent
Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday at the Max Grubbs Courts. First-serve is
slated for noon.
