SUMTER, S.C. - Led by junior Shelby Anderson's five wins, Anderson's women's tennis team posted impressive results at the 2010 USTA/ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Francis Marion, this past weekend at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter.

Anderson earned a straight-set 6-0, 6-2 win past College of Charleston's Olivia Self in singles "B" action Friday night, then knocked off Erkine College's April Horne on Saturday morning, 6-2, 5-7, 6-0, before falling 6-2, 6-1 to Clayton State's Marie Cercelletti in the round of 16.

Earlier in the day on Friday, AU's Camie Beaulieu-Brunet rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Georgia College & State's Michelle Linger in singles "A" play. Beaulieu-Brunet moved on to defeat Queens' Amanda Poole in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-4 Saturday morning, then dropped a three-set, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 decision to eighth-seeded Brandi Cordell of Lander.

AU freshman Lauren Trumbull collected a straight-set, 6-1, 6-0 win past Lees-McRae's Maria Andrade Friday evening, before falling, 6-0, 6-2, to No. seven seed Bertille Lion of GCSU.

Beaulieu-Brunet and Anderson posted two wins in Friday's doubles "B" action, cruising to an 8-2 win over Wingate's Ali Evers and Kara Stasikelis and advancing to the quarterfinals by defeating Clayton State's Jessica Budd and Martina Dedaj by an 8-3 count.

The Trojan duo claimed an 8-5 win over Augusta State's Victoria Lindqvist and Lissa Murakami early Saturday afternoon, but fell just short of the title match with an 8-2 setback to ASU's Camila Correa and Julie Fontaine in semifinal action.

Francis Marion captured both the men's and women's doubles titles in 2009, sending four athletes to the ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala.

The ITA Regional Championships, currently sponsored by the USTA, date back to 1981 and for nearly two decades were also known as the Rolex Regional Championships. The ITA Regional Championships feature the top men's and women's players from each of the ITA's regions. All in all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from 600 schools will participate in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.

Twenty-four men's programs and 27 women's programs are participating in the Southeast Regional.

The Small College (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College) singles and doubles champions from the USTA/ITA Regional Championships will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, held October 14-17 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama.

The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.

The singles and doubles champions at each divisional level will then compete to become the overall "Super Bowl" champions. The "Super Bowl" champions earn wild cards into the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with the opportunity to win the culminating event held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
