Cannon’s Eight Goals Elevate Trojans, Snap Losing Streak Against Lions

Anderson S.C. - The Anderson University women's lacrosse team snapped their three game losing streak in a 20-6 win over Mars Hill on Saturday, April 15 at Spero Financial Field.

How it Happened

Alicia Cannon came off firing on all cylinders, scoring an unassisted hat trick within the first three minutes of play. The Lions looked to Haley Stallings for an answer, and off a feed from Sydney Joyce, she delivered. Hannah Thomas and Alicia Cannon, once again, kept the shots raining, sealing off the first period 5-1.

Then it was Gwen Ontiveros' turn to work, with two free position shots allowing her to put the Trojans up by five. Alexis Lopos also capitalized off a foul from the Lions, earning the defenders first goal of the season. Another trio of goals from both teams left the Trojans with an edge heading into halftime (11-4).

The Lions struck first coming into the second half, with Chandler Warner converting off the free position shot. The Trojans and Cannon responded with two more unassisted, and a feed from Zella Stratbucker to Cassidy Jones, followed by another free position shot from Ontiveros, once again keeping Mars Hill to one heading into the final stretch of regulation (15-5).

Anderson entered the fourth up by 10 and did not stop there. Thomas, twice, finds the back of the net, with Cannon notching another score and assist. With the Lions unable to keep up, Laine Stanton delivers the final blow, sealing the win at home, and ending the Trojans losing streak.

"The team really came to practice focused this week on what we do and going hard all the time," said head coach Gail Wallach, "That definitely showed today."
