Anderson, S.C.- The Anderson University women's lacrosse team lost 15-14 in a hard-fought battle against the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears Wednesday evening at Spero Financial Field.
The Trojans came into Wednesday's game 3-4 in conference play looking to get back in the win column after losing to Wingate on Saturday. Despite outshooting the Bears 31-27 and winning draw controls 19-14, the black and gold fell short going 0-4 on free position shots leading to their one-point loss to LR.
How it Happened
Hannah Thomas scored unassisted to open the game giving the Trojans an early 1-0 lead. The Bears would answer with three goals of their own before Cassidy Jones (assisted by Jackie Tiongco) and Alicia Cannon, unassisted, tied the score at three. LR scored two more putting the Bears up 5-3 and regaining the lead that they would hold for the rest of the game.
In the second period, Hannah Thomas added two more goals for the Trojans while Lili Bouwma and Cassidy Jones each notched one of their own. The Bears outscored the Trojans 5-4 in the second quarter giving them the 10-7 lead heading into halftime.
AU fought back in the third period outscoring the Bears 4-2 and closing the gap to just one goal by the end of the quarter. After LR opened the period with two goals. Hannah Thomas scored back-to-back goals for the Trojans. Her fourth goal of the night came unassisted followed by her fifth off an assist from Lili Bouwma. Cassidy Jones netted her third goal connecting on a pass from Alicia Cannon. With about three minutes to play in the third, Zella Stratbucker scored assisted by Hannah Thomas making the score 12-11. Trojans were down by one heading into the final period.
The Bears and the Trojans kept a tight game in the final quarter with an even score of 3-3. LR scored first putting the Bears up by two. Alicia Cannon answered with an unassisted goal before LR scored again. Megan Cann brought the game within one goal again scoring of an assist from Cannon. The Bears would not back down. They netted their final goal putting them ahead 15-13. Gwen Ontiveros scored the final goal of the game keeping the Trojans fighting until the final horn. Despite a hard-fought battle by the young Trojan team, the Bears remained ahead to outscore AU 15-14.
