Newberry, S.C.- The Anderson women's lacrosse team fell 14-9 to the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday evening. Despite the Trojans scoring in every quarter and topping the Wolves in caused turnovers, groundballs, and turning the ball over less times, they were unable to overcome Newberry.
The Wolves moved to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the SAC while the Trojans move to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Scoring Summary
The Trojans and Wolves battled head to head in the first quarter with five ties and four lead changes. Newberry scored first within the first minute of play before Laine Stanton and Hannah Thomas each scored one off assists from Gwen Ontiveros. This put the Trojans up 2-1 before Newberry tied and then went ahead with back to back goals. Gwen Ontiveros answered with her first goal of the game unassisted to tie the game at three. Laine Stanton scored her second goal of the night putting the Trojans up 4-3. Newberry tied it up again before Gwen Ontiveros scored a man up free position goal giving the Trojans their last lead of the game (5-4). The Wolves regained the lead with a minute to play in the first period and held it until the final horn.
Hannah Thomas and Alicia Cannon each scored one for the Trojans in the second quarter while the Wolves netted three of their own. Newberry led 9-7 heading into halftime. Gwen Ontiveros was the lone scorer in the third period netting one goal unassisted just about three minutes into the quarter. The Trojans headed into the fourth period down by one (9-8).
The black and gold gave up five goals in the final period while only scoring one. Cassidy Jones connected on a pass from Laine Stanton with just under two minutes to play. The Wolves went 3-7 on free position shots on the night while the Trojans went 1-8. The Wolves also topped the Trojans in draw controls 18-9. Penalty trouble and missed shots proved costly for the black and gold in their 14-9 loss to the Wolves.
