Trojans Overcome Pioneers in Final Minute

Greeneville, Tenn.- The Anderson Trojans battled for four quarters against the Pioneers leading up to a tie game with less than a minute to play. Three Anderson goals in the final two minutes led to a 14-13 Trojan victory giving the black and gold their second conference win.

Five Trojans scored on the night with eight goals coming from free position shots. AU led in draw controls 18-10 while also keeping to only 16 fouls while Tusculum committed 37.

With 4 lead changes and six tied scores throughout the game, The Trojans prevailed overcoming the Pioneers in the final 20 seconds of play when Hannah Thomas converted on a free position shot to secure the victory for AU.

How it Happened (scoring summary)

Laine Stanton scored the first goal of the game off a free position shot putting the Trojans on the board first. However, the Pioneers would go on to out score the black and gold 4-1 in the first period.

Stanton again opened the second quarter with a free position goal. Hannah Thomas scored next off an assist from Stanton before Gwen Ontiveros tied the game at four with a free position goal. Three goals in the next three minutes from Tusculum put the Trojans down 7-4. Hannah Thomas and Grace Van Dinter answered with two more Anderson goals sending the black and gold into halftime down by one.

The Trojans and Pioneers tied 4-4 in the third period. Tusculum's Tia Daniel scored first before Anderson answered with three goals. Gwen Ontiveros scored unassisted, Hannah Thomas scored with a free position goal, and Laine Stanton netted a man-up goal unassisted to gain the lead 9-8. Three more Pioneer shots scored before Gwen Ontiveros scored with a free position goal in the final three seconds of the third period heading into the final quarter with the Trojans down by one goal.

Anderson outscored Tusculum 4-2 in the final quarter. Hannah Thomas ties the game at 11 less than a minute into the fourth quarter with a free position goal. Two Pioneer goals put the Trojans down by two with less than three minutes to play. After a missed free position shot, AU maintained possession leading to a goal by Alicia Cannon. Cannon connected again off a pass from Stanton tying the game at 13 with less than a minute to play. Alicia Cannon won the next draw control giving the Trojans possession as the clock winded down. Hannah Thomas was fouled with less than 20 seconds to play leading to a free position attempt. With 18 seconds to play, Thomas netted a free position goal putting the Trojans on top 14-13.
