Trojans’ Team Effort Defeats Cobras in First Conference Game

Anderson, S.C.- The women's lacrosse team secured its first conference win in program history with their 19-6 victory over Coker at home Saturday evening.

The Trojans once again showed strength and depth with eight different players scoring in a balanced team effort keeping the Cobras to just six goals. A strong defensive effort held Coker to just 12 shots on goal.

How it Happened

Alicia Cannon started the first quarter with an unassisted goal off a groundball after a missed shot about two minutes into the game. Gwen Ontiveros then followed with two goals the first assisted by Grace Van Dinter. About halfway through the first quarter, Coker's Amariah Lawson netted one for the Cobras. Hannah Thomas and Gwen Ontiveros answered, each with a free position goal extending the lead to 4.

The Trojans outscored the Cobras in the second period 8-2 with goals coming from Cassidy Jones, Gwen Ontiveros, Hannah Thomas, Zella Stratbucker, and Grace Van Dinter.  Coker added one more making the score 13-3 with the Trojans up by 10 heading into halftime.

Coker opened the third period scoring a man-up goal unassisted before AU answered back with three goals in four minutes. Gwen Ontiveros and Lane Stanton converted on free position shots while Megan Cann netted one with an assist from Lili Bouwma. Coker scored on a free position shot before Cassidy Jones ended the period with a goal, assisted by Alicia Cannon, to put the Trojans up 17-5.

The Final period saw a slower pace with Coker Scoring one goal and Anderson scoring two. Hannah Thomas and Megan Cann each had one for the Black and Gold to round out the game, defeating the Cobras 19-6.

Inside the Box

Gwen Ontiveros led all scorers with six goals and one assist.

Hannah Thomas had five goals, one assist, two ground balls, and two draw controls.

Cassidy Jones had two goals with one ground ball.

Megan Cann had two goals.

Alicia Cannon had one goal and 10 draw controls

Katy Snyder had six draw controls.

Kora Turner made four saves while Ava Drath added two saves in goal for the Trojans
