Lees-McRae Sweeps CVAC Cross Country Titles

ANDERSON, S.C. - Lees-McRae College placed four runners in the top 15 in the women's race and three runners in the top 10 in the men's race on its way to a sweep of the 2004 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Cross Country Championships Friday morning at the Pine Lake Golf Club. Both events were run under cloudy, damp conditions with an occasional light drizzle. In the men's 8K event, Coker's David Green beat Brian Knapp of Lees-McRae by one step to take the individual title in a course-record time of 26:57. The previous course record (27:13) was set by Chris Hiatt of Pfeiffer in 2003. Lees-McRae finished the men's meet with 60 points, five better than second-place St. Andrews Presbyterian. St. Andrews' top finisher was Chris Miller, who came in third. Coker was third, Barton took fourth, Pfeiffer was fifth, and host Anderson was sixth. The remainder of the field in order was: Queens University of Charlotte, Belmont Abbey, Erskine, Mount Olive, and Limestone. In addition to Knapp, the Bobcats placed two more runners in the top 10 - Lewis Martin (27:17, 4th) and Andrew Walton (28:05, 8th). Anderson's top finisher was Ethan Schaffner, who came in fifth (27:49) for his fifth top-11 finish of the season. Green was named Runner of the Year, Miller was named Freshman of the Year, and Craig McPhail of Lees-McRae was named Coach of the Year. In the women's 5K event, Anderson freshman Jennifer Hitt took the lead early and pulled away. Hitt won her first race of the season and recorded her fifth top-six finish with a time of 19:35, 31 seconds ahead of Molly Collins of Queens. Anderson's Ashley Smoak was third (20:10), Melissa Dunlap of Pfeiffer was fourth (20:14), and Jessica Martin of Erskine was fifth (20:19). The top finisher for Lees-McRae was Leslie Thurman, who finished sixth (20:25). She was joined in the top 15 by teammates Rebecca Johnson (20:27, 7th), Janine Donnelly (20:43, 11th), and Angela Chappell (20:54, 13th). Lees-McRae won the women's title with 54 points. Queens was second with 71, and host Anderson was third with 77 points. The remainder of the field in order was: Pfeiffer, Barton, Erskine, St. Andrews, Belmont Abbey, Coker, and Mount Olive.
