FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – No. 44-ranked Anderson men's tennis (1-1) fell by a 5-2 score Friday afternoon at the hands of Emmanuel (1-0). The Trojans were able to start the match off strong by taking the doubles point, but the Lions roared back with 5 singles victories to take the dual.
AU began play by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Junior Patrick Cronin and freshman Vicent Mico notched a 6-2 win at No. 2, before Emmanuel evened up the doubles with a win at No. 1. With the doubles point on the line at the No. 3 spot, the team of sophomore Hampton Goldman and junior Mathis Collignon broke a 5-5 deadlock in the score by holding serve. Then the Trojan team broke the Lions' serve to take the match 7-5.
In singles, Emmanuel raced back to take a 2-1 lead with wins at the No. 5 and 3 positions. At the No. 1 spot, junior Joao Mendes was able to secure the first set 6-4, but Emmanuel's James Girdler staged a 6-3, 6-3 comeback to make the lead 3-1.
The Lions followed by extending their lead to 5-1 with wins at No. 4 and No. 2. With only one match remaining, Trojan junior Drew Cagle was victorious in a back-and-forth match that required a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.
