No. 44 Trojans Open Season With 7-0 Shutout Win

SUMTER, S.C. – No. 44-ranked Anderson men's tennis (1-0) shut out USC Sumter (0-1) by a 7-0 score on Saturday at the Palmetto Tennis Center. The Trojans began the season strong by not dropping a set on the road. With the win, AU has won nine of their last 10 road matches.

AU began the match by taking the doubles point in short order. Following a default at No. 3 doubles, a pair of new Trojans clinched the point. Sophomore Mathis Collignon and junior Joao Mendes notched a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot. With the point in hand, junior Patrick Cronin and freshman Vicent Mico followed with a 6-2 win.

AU's lead moved to 2-0 after receiving a default at the No. 6 position. Sophomore Hampton Goldman dominated at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1 to grow the lead to 3-0. Cronin followed with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3, putting the match away.

To round out the singles, AU finished with a trio of straight set wins. At No. 5, junior Drew Cagle recorded his first victory in two years, 6-1, 6-4. Collignon's 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 gave the Trojans a 6-0 lead. Mico came out on the right side of a two-set battle at the No. 1 spot to bookend the match, 7-5, 6-3.

"I'm proud of the guys and girls today," said AU Head Coach Joey Eskridge. "They started off the season in true Trojan fashion, without dropping a set. They played their hearts out and gave it their all. It was a great effort, and we look forward to the rest of this school year and season with both of these teams."

The Trojans will compete in ITA Individuals before continuing their fall road swing with a match at Emmanuel on Friday, October 6. Match time between the Trojans and Lions is set for 1:00 p.m.
