Erskine Slips Past Anderson, 6-5

DUE WEST, S.C. -- JJ Newman had three hits, including a solo home run in the eighth inning, to lead Erskine College to a 6-5 victory over Anderson University Wednesday afternoon. Erskine improves to 23-6, while Anderson falls to 12-22. Even though both schools are members of the CVAC, the game does not count in the league standings. Erskine finished the game with 13 hits to Anderson's 10. Anderson's offense was led by first baseman John Mac White, who had three hits in five trips. Designated hitter Don Ballard had three RBI for the Trojans. The Flying Fleet scored three runs in the first and one in the second to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Anderson scored single runs in the third and fourth to cut the Erskine lead to 4-3. Tony Graham opened the Anderson third with a double, advance to third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Pitts. In the Anderson fourth, Blair Carson singled, Kyle Lewis walked, Ballard moved Carson and Lewis to second and third with a sacrifice, and Josh Harrison hit a sacrifice fly to score Carson. Trailing 5-3 in the top of the eighth, Anderson pushed across two runs on a two-run single by Ballard to tie the game. But the Fleet answered with what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on Newman's homer. Shelton Cisson also had three hits for the Fleet. Jake Williams allowed two hits in 1 2/3 innings to pick up the victory for the Fleet. 2006 Anderson University Baseball Statistics
