Late Runs Lead Limestone To Victory

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Limestone College scored four runs in the final three innings and then held off an Anderson University rally in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Trojans 8-5 in a CVAC game Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Limestone, 18-24 overall and 12-9 in the CVAC, was led by designated hitter B.J. Bowling, who was 4-for-4 and scored two runs, and first baseman Paul Pesca, who was 3-for-4 and scored two runs. The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three. David Wise had an RBI single in the first, Rob Bouknight rapped a two-run double in the second, and Pesca had a run-scoring single in the third. A two-run homer by Anderson's John Mac White in the fourth cut the Saint lead to 4-2. In the fifth, singles by Josh Harrison and Tony Graham and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Lewis got the Trojans within one, 4-3. White and Jonathan Pitts had two hits apiece for Anderson. From that point, Limestone starter and winner Evan Denton settled down and retired Anderson in order in the sixth, seventh, and eighth. Denton allowed eight hits and five runs in eight innings. He struck out seven and walked just one. Limestone got some insurance in the final three innings. A solo home run by Bowling in the seventh, an unearned run in the eighth, and a two-run homer by Matt Reel in the ninth increased the Saints' lead to 8-3. After the first three Anderson batters reached base and giving up one run in the bottom of the ninth, Denton was replaced by Tyler Anderson. Anderson retired three of the four batters he faced, including two strikeouts to end the game. Anderson has lost seven of its last nine and now stands at 19-31 overall and 8-11 in the CVAC. 2006 Anderson University Baseball Statistics
