Trojans Take Two From Pfeiffer

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson University rallied from a 9-4 deficit to beat Pfeiffer University 11-10 in the seven-inning second game and sweep a CVAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. In the first game, Jonathan Pitts drove in three runs and John Mac White and Don Ballard drove in two runs apiece to lead the Trojans to an 11-8 victory. The sweep snaps a three-game losing streak for Anderson and improves the Trojans to 12-20 overall and 5-4 in the CVAC. Pfeiffer falls to 10-23, 5-9. Anderson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, but Pfeiffer answered with five runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to seize a 9-4 lead. Bryan Braxton, who was 4-for-4 and drove in four runs for the Falcons, had a two-run single in the third and a two-run homer in the fourth. Chris Dove had a two-run triple in the third for the Falcons. Anderson answered Pfeiffer's four-run fourth with four runs in the home half of the frame. The big hits in the inning for the Trojans were a two-run double by Jessie Whiteside and a two-run triple by Cody Nye. After Pfeiffer scored a single run in the sixth to increase its lead to 10-8, the Trojans used two infield errors, two singles, a walk, and a hit batter to push across three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the comeback. Will Cheatham allowed one hit in two innings to pick up the victory for Anderson. Whiteside, Josh Harrison, and Tony Graham had two hits apiece for the Trojans in the second game. In the first game, Anderson scored four runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Solo home runs by Mike McClain in the fifth and Braxton to lead off the sixth cut the Anderson lead to 4-3. The Falcons used two singles, a sacrifice, and a fielder's choice later in the sixth to tie the game at 4. A run-scoring single by Ballard in the sixth and a two-run homer by Pitts in the seventh put Anderson back in front, 7-4. Pfeiffer tallied two unearned runs in the eighth, but Anderson came back with four runs in its half of the eighth for an 11-6 lead. Anderson starter Chris Pitts pitched to one batter in the eighth before being lifted. Pitts scattered nine hits and allowed five runs, four earned, in seven innings. Trailing 11-6 in the ninth, Pfeiffer loaded the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, Braxton provided a two-run single to cut Anderson's lead to 11-8. But Cheatham, the fifth Trojan pitcher of the game, entered the game and struck out the final two Pfeiffer batters to earn a save. Whiteside and Pitts had two hits apiece for Anderson in the first game. Dove had three hits in five trips and Braxton had two hits and three RBI in the first game for the Falcons. Pfeiffer finished the two games with 28 hits to Anderson 19. The two teams will play the third game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. 2006 Anderson University Baseball Statistics
