Anderson Beats Barton In Season Opener

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson University put together a five-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the third inning and Desmond Robson scattered seven hits in 7 1/3 innings to lead the Trojans to a 6-3 victory over Barton in the season opener and CVAC opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. With two outs in Anderson half of the third, Tony Graham walked and Kyle Lewis singled. The throw to try and cut down Graham at third allowed Lewis to move to second. After Jonathan Pitts walked, John Mac White delivered a two-run single, Clint Neville provided a two-run double, and Cody Nye rapped a run-scoring triple to left center field. The Trojans increase their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out walk to Pitts, a hit batter, and an RBI single by Neville. Robson, a junior righthander from Easley, S.C., blanked the Bulldogs until the eighth. In the Barton eighth, an error, a hit batter, and a pair of run-scoring singles by Zach Boyette and Eric McInerny knocked Robson out of the game. Robson allowed just three hits, all singles, in the first three innings. In 7 1/3 innings, Robson struck out four and recorded 13 ground ball outs. Will Cheatham took over for Robson and allowed an RBI single to Brock Godwin before retiring four of last five Barton batters to pick up the save. Barton starter and loser Chris Hill allowed five hits and five runs in six innings. The Bulldogs finished the game with nine hits, three by Tyler Petty. Neville had two of Anderson's six hits. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
