Robson's Four-Hitter Gives Anderson A Split

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson University's Desmond Robson out-dueled Limestone's Ryan Maxa to lead the Trojans to a 2-1 victory in eight innings in the second game and a split of a CVAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. In the first game, Limestone jumped out to a 9-1 lead through three innings and received a strong complete-game performance from Kevin Pucetas to beat Anderson, 11-1. Robson, a junior righthander from Easley, allowed just four hits in eight innings. He struck out three and walked two. In his last three CVAC starts, Robson (4-4) has allowed just three earned runs in 22 innings. The second game, scheduled for seven innings, was scoreless through three innings, but a home run by David Wise in the fourth gave the Saints a 1-0 lead. Anderson had the bases loaded with no outs in the first inning and runners on first and third with one out in the third inning but failed to score both times. The Trojans finally scratched out a run against Maxa in the fifth to tie the game at 1. Josh Harrison led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Kyle Lewis. Lewis advance to second on the throw to the plate and moved to third on a foul out, but a fly out left him stranded at third. In the Limestone eighth, Ian Martin singled with two outs and advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw by Robson. But a ground out ended the inning. Lewis led off the Anderson eighth with a single. After he moved to second on a balk, John Mac White received an intentional walk and Cody Nye walked to load the bases end Maxa's day. Reliever Daniel Phillips got Jessie Whiteside to hit a short fly ball to right field, but the ball dropped just out of the reach of Limestone rightfielder Matt Reel to score Lewis with the winning run. Lewis was 3-for-4 in the second game. Maxa struck out seven and walked three in 7 1/3 innings. Limestone blew open the first game with a six-run fourth. The Saints sent 10 batters to the plate and had six hits in the inning. The big hits were a two-run single by Reel and a two-run homer by Paul Pesca. Staked to a 9-1 lead, Pucetas, a senior righthander from Spartanburg, turned in a dominating six-hit performance. He faced four batters or less in seven innings, struck out 13, and walked just two. He struck out at least one batter in every inning except the fifth, and he struck out the side in the seventh. Two of Anderson's six hits came in the first inning. Five of Anderson's six hits were singles. Limestone added single runs in the sixth and seven to increase its lead to 11-1. Wise hit a solo home run in the sixth, and Martin had an RBI double in the seventh. Limestone's offense in the first game was led by Wise and Asis. Wise finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Asis was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Both Wise and Asis had two doubles apiece. The Saints finished the first game with 17 hits, 10 for extra bases - seven doubles, one triple and two home runs. Blair Carson was 2-for-4 for Anderson in the first game. Anderson is now 19-30 overall and 8-10 in the CVAC, while Limestone stands at 17-23, 11-9. The two teams will play the third game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday. 2006 Anderson University Baseball Statistics
