Knights Salvage Final Game Of Series, 13-4

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Eight different St. Andrews players connected for a hit with seven of them driving in at least one run as the Knights took a 13-4 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference victory over Anderson University Sunday afternoon at Clark Field. The Knights improve to 15-18 overall and 6-12 in the CVAC while the Trojans drop to 15-23, 7-6. Cliff Allred gave St. Andrews a quick 2-0 lead in the first with his fifth home run in five games. Allred's two-run shot to left field was his eighth of the season. Greg Wrape made it back-to-back homers with his fourth of the year, a solo shot to center. After Tony Graham belted a one-out single in the third and advanced to third on a two-base throwing error during a pickoff attempt, Jessie Whiteside drove in Graham for an unearned run on a ground ball to shortstop. Wrape took advantage of a two-out walk of Allred in the bottom of the third by ripping a double to left center that plated Allred from first to give St. Andrews a 4-1 lead. The Knights used five hits and three walked to explode for six runs in the fourth. Michael Eastwood had an RBI double off the center field fence; Matt Harkness and Jason Cargile both had run-producing singles; Wrape took a bases-loaded walk; and sophomore B.J. Horne ripped a two-run single to right center. Adam Stemple collected his first three collegiate hits with a pair of singles and an RBI double down the right field line. Wrape, who missed the cycle by a triple, finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs. Cargile added three hits while Allred drove in a trio and scored three times. Anthony Mehling scattered three runs, two earned, on eight hits over six-plus innings for the victory. Mehling (3-3), who fanned the first four Trojan batters, finished with seven strikeouts. Anderson had no-out, bases-loaded opportunities in both the seventh and ninth. But Anderson scored just one run as the Knights induced double plays in both innings. Will Cheatham allowed seven runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. Cheatham (1-2) and the other five Trojan hurlers combined for 10 strikeouts. Designated hitter Don Ballard led the Trojans offense with three hits. 2006 Anderson University Baseball Statistics
