Trojans and Spartans Square off in Exhibition Contest

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Anderson University volleyball team traveled to the Tar Heel State, Friday night to square off against UNC Greensboro, with the Trojans claiming four of the five sets (16-25, 25-10, 27-25, 25-18,15-6) from the Spartans at Fleming Gymnasium.

"It was great to see all our players contribute in positive ways throughout the match." said Anderson head coach Todd Hay. "We steadied out as the night went on and started to find more rhythm on offense and defense. Our service game greatly improved after set one and that seemed to give us a spark. We were able to keep their passers off balance and therefore make their offense easier to read."

The Spartans were picked sixth in the 2021 Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released on Wednesday.

Through four sets, junior Rylie Sargent led the Trojans with 11 kills, while senior middle hitter Noelle Knutsen and junior outside hitter Tabitha Wheeler each tallied eight kills apiece. Freshman outside hitter Kaitlyn Barrett added five kills in her first collegiate action. Senior setter Madison Roy handed out 24 assists with junior Jenna Long dishing out 20 assists. Senior Alexandra Petrilli paced the Black and Gold with 16 digs.

Led by junior Jaelyn Grimm's five block assists, the Trojans notched 15 blocks and eight aces on the night, with Knutsen chipping in four block assists and a pair of solo blocks, while Sargent added four block assists.

Anderson is slated for its second exhibition in two days, with the Trojans visiting Western Carolina, Saturday at 6 p.m.
