ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson women's tennis team won their fifth straight home match with a 6-3 victory past Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.
Anderson improved to 8-6 overall and 6-0 in the conference, while Newberry slipped to 11-7 and 2-2.
The Wolves claimed a narrow win at No. 1 doubles, but Anderson took the next two doubles' points, with Lindsay Gregory and Clair Larkin teaming up to defeat Newberry's Emily Helsel and Romina Adum, 8-2, at the No. 2 doubles slot, while Avery Owens and Bianca Chequin downed Shannon McManus and Marina Ziehe, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.
The Trojans followed up with four wins in singles action to claim the match, with Owens taking a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win at No.3 past Romina Adum. Shelby Anderson claimed a straight-set, 6-2, 6-1 win over Newberry's Emily Helsel at No. 4, while sophomore Lauren Trumbull eased past Marina Ziehe, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5. Anderson freshman Lindsay Gregory closed out the scoring with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Shannon McManus at the No. 6 spot.
Anderson will get back on the courts Wednesday, when the Trojans play host to league- opponent Brevard. First-serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
