Freshmen Expected To Change AC's Style

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson College women's head soccer coach Bailey Woods is hoping a large and talented freshmen class will help the Lady Trojans make a major move in the CVAC standings. The Lady Trojans (4-14-1) finished last season on a down note. They lost five of their last six conference matches and ended the season with a 2-0 loss to Pfeiffer in the first round of the CVAC Tournament. "This is the biggest group we've had come in since I've been here," Woods said. "This is definitely the most talented class we've had. We've got four players coming in from the Dallas area, which is a soccer hotbed. The level of play is really strong there and they come from some of the top club programs in that area. They will be able to step in and play at this level right away and help us make an impact in the conference." Woods believes the newcomers will allow him to return the Lady Trojans to a three-back system. "We've had to go to four backs the last few years because we didn't have the speed or the experience playing that system in the back," he said. "It was difficult for some of our players to make that adjustment. Now we've got experienced players coming in who have played that style and can step right in." The leader of the Anderson defense will be defender Megan Delancey (Jr., Orlando, Fla.), who has one of the strongest right legs in the CVAC. "Megan is a big, strong player," Woods said. "She stands out in every match. She can make or break a game for us with her ability. When she's at the top of her game, she's one of the top players in the conference. I know she's gotten more confidence since she's been here. She's worked hard this summer and is ready to play. "Megan was honorable mention all-conference last year. She wants to make first team this year. Her maturity level will make her a better player. She's done a great job the last two years. I have a lot of confidence in her ability." The biggest question mark for the Lady Trojans is at goalkeeper where there are no experienced players returning. Stephanie Cartee (So., Easley, S.C.), Bethany Craig (Fr., Central, S.C.), and Amanda English (Fr., Linden, Mich.) all will get looks in goal. "None of the three are traditional keepers," Woods said. "They're all field players who are being converted to goalkeeper. We didn't find out until late that the two players we had set to play goal were not coming back." Up front, the Lady Trojans will be deeper and faster. Clary McCord (Fr., Rowlett, Tx.) and Larissa Fedorowich (Fr., Mississauga, Ontario) both are expected to play big roles in the Anderson's attack. They will work with returees Adriane Klebe (Jr., Easley, S.C.) and Brooke Hooper (Jr., Travelers Rest, S.C.) up front. Crystal Gaffney (So., Milford, Ohio) is the leading returning scorer. She had seven points and three goals last season. "We're going to depend a lot on the freshmen for scoring," Woods said.""Clary and Larissa will be big pieces of our offense. We will be more balanced and much deeper. We will be three deep at all three forward spots. The average speed will increase. We have six or seven players who are faster than the players we had last year." Woods expects the speed to lead to more scoring opportunities. "We've got improved ability in the back to hold the ball, counter attack, and to cover more ground," he said. "We should be able to stay in attacking mode longer. I see improvement in the overall record and conference record from last year. I want to see us in the top third of the conference. I think we've got that kind of ability."
