Diaz Named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. - For the third time this season, Anderson University senior guard Alissa Diaz has been named the South Atlantic Conference women's basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.

"I am excited and grateful once again that Alissa was recognized as Player of the Week by the South Atlantic Conference," said Anderson head coach Jim Brunelli. "As a coach and a team we are always thrilled when we get recognized because it's about what we have done as a team."

Diaz averaged a double-double on the week with a team-high 22 points and 10 rebounds in leading the Trojans to a pair of conference wins on the week, as AU increased its lead at the top spot in the conference standings to two games and extended its win streak to eight games, which is the program's longest since the 2007-08 squad reeled off 20 consecutive victories en route to an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The 5-foot-10 guard also averaged 3.5 assists, while shooting 50.0 percent (17-of-34) from the field in wins at Lenoir-Rhyne and over Mars Hill. Diaz has moved into ninth place all-time in Anderson's scoring record books with 1,130 points and currently ranks second in the league in scoring with her 17.6 points per game and ranks fourth in field-goal accuracy at 49.8 percent.

Diaz led all players with a season-high 27 points, including 24 in the second half and overtime, swiped two steals and blocked a pair of shots in Saturday's overtime win past Mars Hill. She dropped in a game-high 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season in the win over L-R.

The Coral Springs, Fla., native also earned the honor on Dec. 10 after tossing in a then season-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting in just 23 minutes of action in the Trojans' decisive 73-52 win past Peach Belt opponent Georgia College. She claimed the award on Jan. 22 following a week that saw her average 20.5 points in leading the Trojans to a pair of conference wins on the week, adding 4.5 rebounds and an assist per contest, while shooting 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the field in wins past Tusculum and Carson-Newman.

The Trojans open a two-game South Atlantic Conference road swing, beginning at Newberry on Wednesday. AU will be looking for a series sweep after defeating the Wolves, 57-51, earlier this season at the Abney Center.
